Collaboration for Impact launched The Search in June 2014 – an initiative offering $1 million in support to an Australian community working to address society’s biggest challenges. In March 2015, at a ceremony held at Admiralty House, the Governor General of Australia announced Burnie, Tasmania as the community selected by The Search as the most promising early-stage collective impact initiative in Australia.
The initiative, called Burnie Works, is applying the collective impact framework to tackle worklessness caused by entrenched social disadvantage and poor educational attainment. Leaders from industry, government and community have come together to focus on improving the engagement of all young people in education and their transition to employment.
Burnie was selected from a group of 11 communities shortlisted by an eminent panel of Judges who reviewed the shortlisted communities in terms of their community engagement, outcomes focus, leadership and possibility of success. In the words of the Judges, Burnie was found to be ‘a nose ahead’, particularly in regards to the way they have engaged residents and people with lived experience in all parts of the change process.
What is The Search?
The Search is a first of its kind national initiative to help communities come together and successfully address society’s biggest challenges – issues like poverty, alcohol related violence, homelessness, youth unemployment and childhood obesity – through the adoption of the socially innovative Collective Impact framework.
After a staged nine month capacity-building application process, one community – Burnie – was selected from eleven communities shortlisted to receive up to $1 million of funding and resources over a three year period. This community will act as a ‘lighthouse’ example for future Collective Impact initiatives, and transform the way that Australian communities work together to solve our toughest social issues.
